UNL pays full price for the computers located across campus in various labs, but they are only used part time. One goal of this project is to utilize this otherwise wasted resource, by running code from researchers and students using a set of utilities known as Condor. Condor software runs in the background on the desktop and only activates when the computer is idle so that it doesn't interfere with any other use of that computer. If you want to get started using condor, you might start at our FAQ. The details of our setup may be found here.
Condor pools currently harvest unused compute cycles from lab computers in the following locations:
- CBA (College of Business Aministraion)
- IS (Information Services -- Riepma Ross Media Laboratory)
- Libraries (Love Library ESC Lab)
Ultimately, the potential exists to create the most powerful 'computer' in the state of Nebraska by harvesting the unused compute cycles from hundreds of desktop computers across UNL. This type of computing is not limited to only desktop machines. A PS3 may now be used the same way.
